Some people who are against vaccines believe that a special phone alert could lead to a zombie apocalypse.

"Is there a Zombie Apocalypse coming because of 5G towers?" asked a person on a popular Telegram channel called The Patriot Voice, followed by over 50,000 people. They shared this message in late September. The message talks about a so-called expert claiming that Covid-19 vaccines contain harmful pathogens like E. coli bacteria, Marburg, and Ebola viruses, which can be released by an "18 Gigahertz 5G frequency."

The writer also mentioned that FEMA plans to do a test of the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) on either October 4 or 11 at 2:22 PM. They advised turning off all 5G devices. Similar claims about a test alert that could activate diseases in vaccinated people and warnings to turn off phones have been shared many times on a platform called X (formerly known as Twitter).

However, most of what these comments say is not true, except for the fact that FEMA and the Federal Communications Commission are conducting tests of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on October 4. The wireless part of this test will happen around 2:20 PM Eastern Time and will be sent to all cell phones. The message will be simple: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed." It might be a little surprising or annoying at most, but it definitely won't turn anyone into a zombie, and the Marburg virus doesn't do that either.

However, some online conspiracy theorists interpret these tests as signs of impending disaster, often related to their concerns about vaccines and 5G signals. Conspiracists have wrongly linked 5G networks to Covid-19 and vaccines throughout the pandemic. In the U.K., for instance, two anti-vaxxers were convicted for trying to destroy 5G towers that they called "enemy infrastructure."
